TA-65: Anti-Aging Extract From Astragalus

Astragalus has become very popular recently, due to a “magical” TA-65 extract derived from this plant, which has been shown to reverse the ageing process. TA stands for Telomere Activator. Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences and play a central role in cell aging by adjusting the cellular response to stress and growth stimulation. Simply put, Telomeres are part of human DNA, attached to the end of our chromosomes. As cells divide, telomeres get shorter and shorter. Eventually they become too short so that cells can not divide anymore and this is one of the theories of aging.

So could it really be the magic pill people are hoping for? TA-65 supplementation helps to elongate short telomeres and increase health span of adult/old mice without increasing cancer incidence. It also has lead to an improvement of certain health-span indicators including glucose tolerance, osteoporosis and skin fitness.  At the moment it is still a relatively new thing and not enough research has been done on long-term use implications if they exist.

TA-65 is derived from Astragalus root. It is available in United States and there are only two (correct me if I’m wrong) bio-tech companies who produce it. Hence, it comes at a very hefty four digit price for a six months supply. So you can only try it if you are a very rich health enthusiast, prepared to part with thousands of pounds for a bag of pills. Which begs the question: can one experience similar benefits without high cost just by taking Astragalus extract? Not according to T.A. Sciences:

“We tested 4 commonly available Astragalus extracts and none of them contained any measurable amounts of TA-65 (the test assay is accurate to one part per million). Our proprietary production process starts with 3 tons of plant material and ends up with capsules that we guarantee contain 5mg of TA-65.”

So the amount of TAs in Astragalus tinctures or dry extracts is too insignificant to work. Also, there are no independent tests that confirm that Astragalus supplements activate telomerase in humans. But one can always try. There are theories that it is possible to boost telomerase naturally by up to 30 per sent just by following a plant-based, wholegrain diet with little sugar. Personally, as far as anti-ageing goes I’d stick with a healthy diet, a good multi-vitamin and mineral formula, carotenoids, amino-acids and Resveratrol. But if I ever would be able to afford TA-65 I would definetely give it go.
